So here goes, first race of the season and I normally rely on racing to get ‘race’ fit but only planning on 3 x half’s means I need to reconsider….
Swim – pleased it was shortened especially when Kevin appeared after the “warm-up” looking like a swamp beast (sorry) I was still washing that algae out of my beard 12 hours later. Once in, it felt ok and even being scrawny I could of gone around comfortably again. No split.
Bike – pretty good but the shortened swim made drafting inevitable, tried to race an honest race and was in the top 20 until about 70km when the high pace and lack of fuelling kicked in, so proceeded to over eat and drink in the last 40 minutes, which I paid for on the run, no official split but recorded 2:36 on my Garmin. had 4 x gels and 1 x bar + 750ml flat coke.
Run – spent 12km trying not to throw up and didn’t drink or eat anything and then had 3-4km ok even did some sub 4:30min/km then hit the wall and cramped up and was reduced to walking large portions of the return part of the last leg. First time I’ve worn compression socks (primarily for warmth…) for a whole race and wonder if that contributed to the cramps, anyone got any comments
Total was 4:36, so a reasonable time, but made a few mistakes to sharpen up on come Holkham, as have a 4:32 (with a full swim to improve upon) Like Ross need to practise keeping the in the TT position for 2.5hrs! The guy behind me in the photo went on to finish 5th.
