I had a crack at Newmarket this weekend, my first event for six years also my second event.
Pre-race fine until about an hour to go, then started to feel really nervous.
Swim, the only discipline I’m even half decent at, fine took it easy nice strong stroke. Then I saw the clock, omg I can swim quicker than that, pushed a bit harder for the last 150 meters.
T1, feeling good ran down the racking to my bike, that’s not my bike omg where did I put my bike, looking for a black bike without your glasses on is tricky it turns out. After a minor panic I realised don’t look for the bike look for your bright orange trainers ahh there it is. Jogged out to the mount line damn not got the peddles in the right place, had to sort them out and then get on the bike (sorry Martin),
Bike, How easy is it to get wet feet into cycle shoes, not at all. Had put talc in my shoes as recommend by Carl and others, but you need to make sure you get talc in the heels. Nice ride struggled with the hills (ok slopes) as usual but felt good. On the way back into Newmarket wind behind and felt like I was zooming along, then Alan and Jon came past. After the last hill feet out of shoes, make sure you nail that dismount. Ok up to the line dismount just before and run over the line, what the hell are my legs doing.
T2, need to get trainers that do not dissect my feet unless wearing socks off onto the run.
Run, Thanks to the marshal who said “Ooh I bet your legs hurt after the bike”, have to say running downhill after getting off a bike was interesting. First lap awful, second lap quite nice even nearly enjoyed it. Ely Tri club contingent at the finish so have to sprint the last…. well 20 metres.
Finished and on reflection really quite enjoyed it.
So how did I do:
Swim 6:44 (So, So expected better)
Bike 54:25 (15mph average which is faster than I’ve managed before)
Run 27:18 (Best time in training was 28 minutes for 4k so pleased with this)
Overall 1:30:38 (Target beat 1:45 from last time, nailed it)
Looking forward to Fritton in June, More bike training and more running.
